Our NYC Wedding!

New York City.  A place that I had never been, but always longed for. When we booked a wedding in New Jersey late last year, I was ecstatic. Exploring new places is one of our favorite things to do together, so we planned several "us" days in the big apple following the wedding. Although NYC wasn't new to him, it was new to us. I couldn't WAIT.

Fast forward a few weeks.  He asked me what I thought about getting married while we're in New York, just the two of us in Central Park. Keep in mind, we weren't even officially engaged yet.  But we had both known since practically the beginning that we would be together for the rest of our lives. And being the second marriage for both of us, and what we do for a living every weekend, we didn't want a big wedding. We craved something intimate and adventurous.  I knew as soon as he said it that this was what we were meant to do.

Once he officially proposed in March, we immediately started planning.  He booked his friend Oscar with Motion Minds to film us.  (Watch our wedding film here. It's EPIC!)  I found my dress, he found our ceremony spot, we bought our bands and booked our hotel.  The one thing we hesitated on was photography.  We have several photographer friends in the NYC area that are amazing and we almost bit the bullet and booked one of them.  But the idea of photographing it ourselves was so alluring to us. "Could we do it?" "Would we regret not hiring someone else?" I knew this meant there are certain shots we wouldn't get.  I knew we would most likely get so wrapped up in each other and the emotion of the moment, we may forget to click the shutter. But we already take "selfies" with the tripod everywhere we go....maybe we could do this?  We ultimately decided we were up for the challenge.  I mean, what is more fun than telling the grand-kids you photographed your own wedding!

It took some creativity and ingenuity,  but we did it.  We used tripods with wireless shutters, the self timer on the camera, and each other.  There are many shots we didn't get, and I'm okay with it. Here are some of our favorites:

I saved the following image for last. Here's the story behind it.  It had been overcast for days so we were planning on having our first look on the rooftop of our hotel with the NYC skyline behind us.  However, we woke up with the sun shining bright, so we had to find another spot.  I told Rob I didn't care....to choose a place, tell me when and where and I'll be there.  He went off with his friend Jason to hunt down our location.  After some searching, he found a boulder in Central Park that felt right.  After sitting (and pacing) on the rock for 30 minutes or so, Rob spots white paint on the side of the rock.  "Jason, look at this!!! Do you see what I see?!" The only writing on the entire boulder, pretty warn, and obviously old.  The paint was dried and chipping off.  It looked like it had been there for quite some time. Jason couldn't believe it, and as he met me to walk me to my groom, whispered in excitement, "just wait until you see what we found! You're going to love it". Of all the places in NYC, of all the rocks in Central Park, Rob unknowingly chose the one marked with a heart and our initials. The same heart and initials we had printing on our wedding invitations weeks prior. I wouldn't have believed it had there not been witnesses. I would have thought it was some grand romantic gesture devised by my love.  But he was never alone on this trip, and he and everyone we were with assert it is real.
I had never felt so loved as I did in that moment, marrying the love of my life with the entire universe behind us.

It was one of the best moments of my life.  Definitely the best trip of my life.  It was perfect.

We'll share more of our NYC adventures and street photography in another blog post soon.

  1. At my wedding, all the guests (literally, all) told me how the food surpassed all expectations, since wedding food generally sucks. The brisket at Seattle Wedding venues was mind-blowing. My husband also had some custom choices for food that the chef easily made and incorporated.
